Why book hotel stays with points

Hotel award redemptions consistently beat cash bookings on aspirational stays — overwater villas in the Maldives, Paris five-star city hotels, ski resort weeks — where cash rates climb past $1,000 a night but points pricing stays flat. The trick is matching the right program to the right stay: World of Hyatt for capped award rates, Marriott for fifth-night-free week-long trips, Hilton for the Aspire free night certificate, and IHG for the cardholder fourth-night-free perk.

RoomPoints surfaces live points pricing and the cents-per-point value of every award night across the four major programs. Compare a brand's saver rates against the cash price, factor in transferable currency you already hold (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt), and book at the moment a property dips below its program baseline.

How the four major programs compare

Quick reference for the points math. Lower entry rates start awards faster; higher CPP baselines mean each point is worth more.

Frequently asked questions

Real answers about hotel brands, award stays, and which loyalty program is right for you.

World of Hyatt usually returns the highest cents-per-point value (1.7¢ baseline) thanks to a published award chart and low Category 1-4 caps. Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors trade off raw CPP for a much larger global footprint and aggressive fifth-night-free benefits on longer stays.

Yes — Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers 1:1 to World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards. Amex Membership Rewards transfers 1:1 to Marriott Bonvoy and 1:2 to Hilton Honors. Bilt also transfers to Hyatt 1:1, often with a monthly bonus.

Marriott Bonvoy is the largest, covering 8,500+ hotels across 30+ brands. Hilton Honors follows at 7,000+ properties, IHG One Rewards at 6,000+, and World of Hyatt is the smallest of the four at 1,300+ hotels — but typically the strongest on per-redemption value.

All four major programs expire points after a period of account inactivity: 24 months for World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors; 12 months for IHG One Rewards. Any qualifying stay, transfer, or co-brand credit card purchase resets the clock.

Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors both award the fifth night free when you book five or more consecutive award nights at the same property on standard rewards. The discount applies automatically, saving 20% on a week-long stay. IHG One Rewards offers a similar fourth-night-free perk for Premier cardholders.

Use RoomPoints to compare live award rates across World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards simultaneously. The platform surfaces the lowest points price per night, flags properties below their program baseline CPP, and calls out fifth- and fourth-night-free eligible stays.
